The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is scheduled to convene on Monday, focusing on filling essential positions following the election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized the importance of making these appointments, as they fall under the COC’s mandate to advise the President on several critical roles.
The COC is responsible for recommending candidates for various significant positions, including:
– Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission,
– Chair and members of the Electoral Commission,
– Supervisor of Elections,
– Parliament Secretary General,
– Chair and members of the Public Service Commission,
– Police Commissioner,
– Commissioner of Fiji Correction Services,
– Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces,
– Auditor General,
– Governor of the Reserve Bank.
Seruiratu expressed his anticipation for the meeting and the importance of obtaining the necessary endorsements. Notably, the position of Police Commissioner remains unfilled, which Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has stressed is crucial for effective governance. Prime Minister and COC chair Sitiveni Rabuka mentioned that while the acting Police Commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, is performing well, the need for a permanent appointment is acknowledged.
Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya reiterated that many matters are pending and expressed confidence that the government understands the necessary actions to take.
This meeting represents an opportunity for the COC to streamline decision-making in crucial leadership areas within the government, which could enhance operational efficiency and governance in Fiji.
Overall, as new appointments progress, there is hope for a strengthened institutional framework that will support the country’s democratic processes and public welfare.
