COC Meeting Set to Shape Fiji’s Leadership Landscape

The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is scheduled to convene on Monday to address critical vacancies following the election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized the importance of filling key positions that fall under the COC’s recommendation mandate.

The COC serves as an advisory body to the President on several significant appointments, including:

– Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission
– Chair and members of the Electoral Commission
– The Supervisor of Elections
– Parliament Secretary General
– Chair and members of the Public Service Commission
– Police Commissioner
– Fiji Correction Services Commissioner
– Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces
– Auditor General
– Governor of the Reserve Bank

Mr. Seruiratu expressed anticipation for the upcoming meeting, noting that it would facilitate required endorsements from the new President, Ratu Naiqama. One pivotal position that remains vacant is that of the Commissioner of Police. Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has repeatedly underscored the need for a substantive appointment to this role. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who chairs the COC, acknowledged that while the Acting Commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, is performing well, a new appointment is necessary.

Senior Opposition Member Faiyaz Koya reiterated the urgency of these appointments, indicating that many issues remain unresolved and urge the government to follow due processes to address them.
