The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is set to convene on Monday, with significant discussions anticipated regarding the appointment of key officials following the election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu highlighted the urgency of addressing vital vacancies that fall under the COC’s advisory mandate.
The COC plays a crucial role in advising the President on various appointments, including positions such as the Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, the Electoral Commission, the Supervisor of Elections, and several other vital roles within the government and law enforcement agencies.
Seruiratu expressed optimism about the upcoming meeting, stating that it is a pivotal moment for endorsing necessary appointments, particularly with the Commissioner of Police position remaining vacant. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has repeatedly emphasized the importance of appointing a permanent Commissioner of Police, and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who chairs the COC, acknowledged the adept performance of the current Acting Commissioner but recognized the necessity for a formal appointment.
Additionally, Senior G17 Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya emphasized the backlog of pending appointments, urging the government to follow due processes while being aware of the priorities that need to be addressed.
