The village of Waicoka in Bau, Tailevu, is increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly rising sea levels and intensifying weather patterns that threaten its coastline. Village Headman Osea Kiliraki has raised alarms about the deteriorating condition of their village hall, which is suffering from weakened structural integrity, making it unsafe for community gatherings.
With sea encroachment becoming more pronounced, Waicoka’s approximately 200 residents and 47 homes face an uncertain future. Kiliraki voiced the urgent need for intervention, stating, “Climate change is affecting our village, especially the villagers. Our village hall is no longer safe for meetings on the top floor.”
In response to the persistent flooding, the villagers have been reinforcing their seawall, although the relentless tide continues to challenge their defenses. The community has made a heartfelt appeal for assistance from local authorities to protect their homes from the rising waters.
This plight is reflected in other coastal communities, such as Vatulele Island and Kia Island, where residents face similar threats from coastal erosion. For instance, communities in Vatulele have been utilizing sandbags for protection, demonstrating a strong sense of cooperation known as the solesolevaki concept. Meanwhile, residents on Kia Island are also reaching out for governmental support to secure their properties.
These narratives from Waicoka, Vatulele, and Kia Island highlight not only the dangers of climate change but also the resilience and solidarity among these communities as they confront this escalating crisis.
