Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed deep concerns regarding a breach of trust within his coalition government, following a public criticism made by SODELPA general secretary Viliame Takayawa against Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. Rabuka emphasized that “the bubble has been burst,” indicating a significant upset in the foundation of mutual respect that the coalition relies upon.

Rabuka noted that the trust essential for a functioning partnership is now compromised, stating, “Trust is no longer there.” Although SODELPA remains a coalition partner, the Prime Minister announced that future engagements would be approached with caution. He emphasized the importance of mutual respect in maintaining the coalition’s integrity and warned that repeated breaches will not be tolerated. “For a senior party official to attack another leader shows that trust is no longer there,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister further asserted the need for SODELPA to adhere to the established ground rules, cautioning that compliance is crucial for the coalition’s stability. Rabuka made it clear that any future infractions would be viewed as a lack of genuine remorse. “You cannot keep breaking the rules,” he declared as he urged all coalition members to prioritize upholding unity and cooperation for the benefit of the Fijian people.

In a context that echoes past critiques of SODELPA’s leadership, Rabuka’s comments demonstrate a proactive approach to preserving the coalition’s function and integrity amidst rising tensions. This incident highlights the necessity of open communication and adherence to collective commitments as critical components in fostering a collaborative governance environment.

Despite these challenges, there remains a hopeful perspective that through dialogue and reconstruction of trust, the coalition can navigate these issues effectively and continue working towards delivering positive outcomes for Fiji. The focus on unity amid political challenges reinforces the potential for governance that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of the populace.
