Former SODELPA Party Leader and current Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka has reaffirmed his dedication to the Coalition alliance during a recent statement to Fiji One News. He urged for calm and constructive dialogue in response to concerns raised by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who has hinted at potentially reconsidering their coalition agreement.
Gavoka emphasized that SODELPA remains committed to the government it helped establish following the 2022 general election, describing the current political tensions as regrettable yet resolvable. “SODELPA wants to be in the coalition. Our people want to be in the coalition,” he expressed, indicating a desire to resolve the underlying issues that led to these disputes.
His comments come as Prime Minister Rabuka has voiced his dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the coalition’s functioning, referencing internal concerns and a need for better communication among partners. Reflecting on these challenges, Gavoka underscored the importance of democratic principles, noting that while freedoms have grown, they should not be wielded to unjustly criticize the government. He asserted that the fundamental values of Fiji’s democracy are strong, arguing that the public does not wish to return to past governance structures.
Gavoka’s statements align with previous assertions from SODELPA regarding the need for transparency and mutual respect within the coalition. Alongside the party’s General Secretary, Viliame Takayawa, he emphasized their commitment to fairness, transparency, and the principles enshrined in the Coalition Agreement.
This ongoing discourse among coalition members presents an opportunity to reinforce trust and inclusivity, vital for effective governance that benefits all Fijians. The focus on dialogue reflects hope for collaborative solutions that can stabilize and strengthen the political environment in Fiji as the country navigates its evolving governance dynamics.
