Coalition Confidence: Will It Lead to Election Success?

Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad has expressed his belief that a Coalition Government, where multiple political parties collaborate, aligns with the leadership style that citizens favor. During his appearance on Lens@177, Prof Prasad emphasized that maintaining this coalition could lead to stronger support in upcoming elections.

He highlighted the importance of the coalition, particularly with the National Federation Party (NFP) and People’s Alliance (PA), stating, “I expect more support for us if we keep the coalition and go into the election as we did last time.” This reflects a growing sentiment among the electorate for leaders who prioritize collaboration.

While he noted that previous attempts at a coalition government, such as those led by Jai Ram Reddy and Sitiveni Rabuka in 1999, did not succeed, he pointed out that the concept itself maintained relevance. “They weren’t successful, but the idea didn’t die. We came into government as a two-party coalition, and we are very happy that SODELPA joined us,” he added.

Prof Prasad displayed optimism regarding the coalition model’s appeal, suggesting that it might significantly influence the results of the upcoming 2026 elections. Although he acknowledged uncertainties regarding SODELPA’s future role within the coalition, he reiterated that this collaborative approach is what the public desires.

This perspective on coalition governance is a positive sign for political engagement, suggesting that leaders are increasingly aware of the importance of unity and collaboration in addressing the needs of their constituents.

As we approach future elections, it will be interesting to observe how this coalition strategy evolves and whether it successfully resonates with the electorate, ultimately strengthening democratic participation.
