Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed serious concerns over the deteriorating trust within the coalition government, particularly in light of recent comments made by the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) General Secretary, Viliame Takayawa. Rabuka stated that the spirit of cooperation that had previously existed within the coalition has diminished since December 2022.

Responding to Takayawa’s recent actions regarding the government’s trade delegations to Tonga, Rabuka confirmed that while Takayawa has apologized, the atmosphere moving forward will be one of increased suspicion and caution. He stated, “If he does the same again, it would indicate that he did not truly mean the apology, which would necessitate more severe consequences.”

Rabuka emphasized that SODELPA must prioritize the well-being of Fiji’s citizens and support the coalition in its goals, particularly the completion of the next two budgets. He reiterated the importance of unity among coalition members, urging ministers and assistant ministers to commit to working together for the remainder of the government’s term.

Similar articles have highlighted ongoing tensions within the coalition, particularly due to criticisms directed at Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica’s recent trade mission to Tonga. Takayawa’s remarks about the delegation’s performance and connectivity with the Fijian diaspora were interpreted by Rabuka as symptomatic of deeper issues within SODELPA’s leadership. This dissatisfaction has prompted Rabuka to reconsider the coalition agreement, signaling that without prudent behaviour from SODELPA, its position in the coalition could be jeopardized.

Despite these challenges, there remains a thread of hope. Past statements from coalition members have emphasized the critical need for open dialogue and collaboration to facilitate stability and foster effective governance. As Fiji navigates its current political landscape, the emphasis on transparent communication and mutual respect amongst partners may pave the way for renewed trust and cooperative solutions that ultimately benefit the Fijian populace.
