Coalition Chaos: PM’s Cabinet Expansion Sparks Controversy

Spread the love

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent move to expand Fiji’s Cabinet to 22 ministers has stirred significant controversy and raised questions about adherence to the Coalition Agreement in place since 2022. This agreement, formed between the People’s Alliance, the National Federation Party, and the Social Democratic and Liberal party, explicitly limits the size of the Cabinet to 20 members. Constitutional lawyer Jon Apted argues that this expansion not only breaches this cap but also could undermine the collaborative nature of the existing coalition governance.

Despite the legal ambiguities surrounding the Coalition Agreement—which is described as a “gentleman’s agreement” without enforceability in court—Apted emphasized that the dynamics of coalition politics do necessitate some flexibility to accommodate changing scenarios. He pointed out that any breaches should ideally be addressed internally among coalition partners.

In the wake of this expansion, many sugarcane growers have voiced their intentions to leave the industry within the next five years, reflecting concerns over the future of Fiji’s agricultural landscape. The political changes coincidentally come as demands for greater accountability and responsiveness to pressing socio-economic challenges are echoed by citizens.

The reshuffle includes key appointments of independent Members of Parliament, previously part of the FijiFirst party, to critical positions such as Minister for Immigration and Minister for Policing. This has led to divergent opinions within political and public circles. Proponents assert that a larger Cabinet will enhance governance and enable a more effective response to issues like climate change and law enforcement. Critics, such as former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, argue that it adds unnecessary bureaucracy without addressing key issues, including rising poverty and high living costs.

As Fiji faces these changes, the need for transparency, community engagement, and responsible governance has never been more critical. Observers remain hopeful that, despite the turbulence, the political landscape may yield a more responsive and accountable leadership structure that prioritizes the needs of the citizens and re-establishes public trust in governmental institutions.

In summary, while this Cabinet expansion raises significant questions about accountability and adherence to political agreements, it also presents an opportunity for the government to realign its objectives, ensuring it is focused on the well-being of all Fijians moving forward. The journey toward improved governance and unity amid diversity remains a hopeful path for Fiji’s future.
