The chairman of Lakapi Samoa, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, has addressed the ongoing delay in selecting a new head coach for the Manu Samoa rugby team, attributing the holdup to issues with the interview panel overseeing the hiring process. Tuilaepa explained that the committee, which includes both local and overseas members, has caused a backlog in finalizing the selection.
The international rugby team is set to compete against Scotland in June and will participate in the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup, which serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The head coach position became vacant when Mase Mahonri Schwalger resigned in January 2025 after being charged with multiple sexual offenses. His immediate resignation was accepted by the Lakapi Samoa board, who had previously suspended him pending a review.
Tuilaepa expressed his frustration with the media’s incessant inquiries about the coaching situation, emphasizing the current absence of imminent tournaments. He reassured that the assistant coaches are adept enough to manage the team in the meantime. The interview process for the new head coach was conducted in early March, revealing a competitive field of applicants, including candidates from the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.
The urgency of making a decision highlights the importance of solid leadership for Manu Samoa as they prepare for crucial upcoming matches. With the weight of these responsibilities, the process reflects a commitment to ensuring that the team is guided effectively through this transitional phase.
As the search continues, there remains optimism that the new head coach will bring fresh strategies and vision to the team, fostering a promising future for Manu Samoa rugby in the lead-up to major competitions. The dedication to securing a suitable candidate enhances hope for a strong performance as the team navigates these pivotal tournaments.
