A violent altercation outside a nightclub in Suva on Sunday morning has ignited discussions across social media platforms, as many are questioning the accountability for the events that unfolded. The incident reportedly involved intoxicated members of the Vusu Raiders Rugby League Club from Namatakula, Nadroga, who allegedly faced physical aggression from nightclub security personnel.
Six players were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the brawl, with three receiving treatment at Sigatoka Hospital and the remainder at Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH). According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu, two of the hospitalized players at CWMH remain unconscious, while the third is in stable condition.
Akuila Masi, the manager of the Vusu Raiders, opted not to file a formal complaint at this stage, as the situation is still under police review. Nevertheless, Masi criticized the response of the nightclub’s bouncers, describing their use of chairs and safety boots as excessive and unwarranted. He has called for privacy for the affected players and their families while the investigation is ongoing.
This brawl could potentially impact the plans of the Suva Retailers Association to request extended nightclub hours, which they intended to submit formally for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve next year. Association president Jitesh Patel, unaware of the incident at the time as he was in the Western Division, emphasized his trust in the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the occurrence.
