Closing the Gap: Fiji Rugby’s Quest for Elite Fitness and Talent

There exists a significant disparity in conditioning and game pace between players participating in the Skipper Cup and those competing in the Super Rugby Pacific, according to Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne. In an interview with SUNsports, Byrne explained that the reason Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua is the only locally-based player in the Flying Fijians squad for the Pacific Nations Cup reflects this gap.

Byrne emphasized that the current structure of professional rugby requires rigorous commitment: “At this early stage, we have a full professional rugby set-up where players train rigorously in the mornings and focus on rugby as their main occupation.” He acknowledged that one of the key challenges ahead is to elevate the standards and fitness levels of Skipper Cup teams to match those of higher competitions.

Byrne expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Skipper Cup coaches to bridge this divide. He noted having received valuable insights from players in the Skipper Cup regarding their energy levels and performance metrics, hinting at the potential for identifying talented players who could progress to the Fijians Warriors program.

He remains optimistic that standout players from the Skipper Cup could eventually join the Drua franchise. “These players might push themselves into our team through the Warriors,” he added.

In terms of squad composition, the addition of France-based Adrea Cocagi aims to strengthen the depth at the second-five eighth position. Cocagi, who has been making a name for himself with Castres in the Top 14, is recognized as a powerful runner in the midfield. Byrne expressed anticipation for Cocagi’s contributions in the upcoming campaign.

Cocagi has already made two Test appearances for the Flying Fijians under the coaching of Vern Cotter. Originating from Nuku Village in Serua, he started his rugby journey at Lomary Secondary School before moving on to the National Rugby League (NRL) with the Newcastle Knights.

Byrne stated that the Pacific Nations Cup will serve as an opportunity to evaluate the players’ performance. He highlighted Cocagi’s capabilities as essential for competing against their Pacific rivals.

Additionally, Byrne confirmed that hooker Zuriel Togiatama would not be included in the squad due to family commitments in Auckland, New Zealand. He mentioned having communicated with Simione Kuruvoli, who has consistently played since the World Cup, suggesting that Kuruvoli deserves time to spend with his family.

The 30-member Flying Fijians squad is set to assemble for training tomorrow.
