Six passengers and their pilot have fortunately avoided serious injuries following an incident involving a miscalculated landing at Yasawa Aerodrome yesterday. The Fiji Government has confirmed that the aircraft, a GA-8 Airvan with the registration DQ-VAN, experienced difficulties during its landing.
The flight departed from Nadi Airport at 9:49 am and, upon arrival at Yasawa Aerodrome, the plane overran the runway, eventually coming to a halt just outside the designated strip. Although the aircraft did sustain damage, specifically to its nose wheel and propeller, all individuals on board are safe.
Following the incident, the Yasawa Aerodrome remains operational and normal aviation activities have resumed. Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, has announced plans to appoint an investigator to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the accident, adhering to established procedures and international safety standards. The results of this investigation are expected to inform future strategies for enhancing safety measures within the aviation sector.
In light of this incident, it’s reassuring to see that there were no serious injuries, highlighting the resilience of the safety protocols in place. With the minister’s commitment to a comprehensive investigation, there is hope that valuable lessons will be learned and implemented to further improve aviation safety in the region.
