Close Call at Yasawa Aerodrome: Aircraft Overruns Runway But All Safe!

An incident involving a GA-8 Airvan aircraft, registered as DQ-VAN, took place at Yasawa Aerodrome on the morning of December 21, 2024. The aircraft departed from Nadi Airport at 9:49 AM and, upon landing at Yasawa Aerodrome, it overran the runway before coming to a halt just beyond the runway limits.

Fortunately, the aircraft only incurred damage to its nose wheel and propeller. Importantly, both the pilot and the six passengers on board were unharmed, with no injuries reported.

Aviation activities at Yasawa Aerodrome are continuing as the runway remains operational. In response to the incident, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, the Minister responsible for Tourism and Civil Aviation, has announced plans to appoint an investigator to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the accident. This investigation will adhere to established protocols and international standards, ensuring that any findings will lead to enhanced safety measures in the future.

The safety and well-being of all passengers and crew involved in Fiji’s aviation sector is a priority for the Ministry. The rapid response and support from relevant authorities and personnel are commendable, highlighting the system’s preparedness in dealing with aviation incidents.
