Lester Lowane, a 24-year-old university student, recently survived a harrowing experience during a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake in Vanuatu. While Christmas shopping with his mother, they found themselves trapped inside a collapsed building, just moments away from disaster.
Lowane recounted how the tremors began suddenly as they entered a store in the central business district. Initially, he thought the shaking might pass, but as it intensified, he realized they needed to escape. Unfortunately, the doors were locked, and as they made their way to a different exit, the building crumbled around them. A heavy cement post fell perilously close to him, and both Lowane and his mother fell to the ground before the ceiling collapsed.
As a result of the falling debris and concrete, Lowane lost consciousness and awoke to a bloodied jaw. Despite the chaos, he found himself in a pocket of space, able to send text messages for help.
