Lester Lowane, a 24-year-old university student, recently survived a harrowing experience during a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake in Vanuatu. While Christmas shopping with his mother, they found themselves trapped inside a collapsed building, just moments away from disaster.

Lowane recounted how the tremors began suddenly as they entered a store in the central business district. Initially, he thought the shaking might pass, but as it intensified, he realized they needed to escape. Unfortunately, the doors were locked, and as they made their way to a different exit, the building crumbled around them. A heavy cement post fell perilously close to him, and both Lowane and his mother fell to the ground before the ceiling collapsed.

As a result of the falling debris and concrete, Lowane lost consciousness and awoke to a bloodied jaw. Despite the chaos, he found himself in a pocket of space, able to send text messages for help. He and his mother remained trapped in the rubble for about 24 hours before search and rescue teams managed to reach them, cutting through concrete to free them.

Lowane emerged from the wreckage with a fractured jaw, while his mother sustained only minor injuries. In the days following the earthquake, he experienced lingering fear and anxiety from the aftershocks, but he remains grateful for his survival and the support of his family throughout this traumatic ordeal.

In his recovery, he remains hopeful, expressing his gratitude to the emergency responders, including local forces and the governments of New Zealand and Australia, for their assistance.

The overall situation in Vanuatu remains serious, with a reported death toll of 14 and thousands of residents displaced. As recovery efforts continue, authorities are working to restore infrastructure and support those affected by the disaster.

This story serves as a profound reminder of resilience in the face of natural calamities, illuminating the strength of community and the importance of emergency preparedness. It highlights both personal survival and collective action in the wake of tragedy, inspiring hope and solidarity among those affected.
