Work will commence next year to enhance four vital bridges in Viti Levu, aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and natural disasters. This initiative, known as the Fiji Critical Bridges Resilience Project, has been approved by the Cabinet and is a significant undertaking cofinanced by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank. The project is expected to create jobs, stimulate investment, and directly support over half of Fiji’s population.
The specific bridges targeted for improvement include:
1. Lami Bridge in Suvavou
2. Medraukutu Bridge at the Lami Cement Factory
3. Sabeto Bridge at the Sabeto River
4. Viseisei Bridge connecting Nadi and Lautoka
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Prof. Biman Prasad, highlighted the necessity of these bridges as essential public assets connecting major cities along the Queens Highway. He emphasized that these upgrades are not only about improving capacity and safety but also about ensuring resilience against the growing threats posed by climate change.
The total project cost is approximately USD 200 million, with funding distributed as follows:
– USD 134.5 million from ADB, including USD 120 million as a concessional loan and USD 14.5 million as a grant
– USD 50 million from the World Bank, split equally between concessional financing and market terms
– About USD 15 million from the Fiji government, covering various associated costs
Prof. Prasad noted that due to its highly concessional financing structure, the project carries a significant grant element, enhancing its long-term sustainability. With a completion target set for 2031, the project aims to modernize infrastructure and improve connectivity throughout the region.
The World Bank is optimistic that this initiative will benefit approximately 62% of Fiji’s population by enhancing mobility, fostering social inclusion, and creating economic opportunities. The project will also integrate advanced climate and seismic risk assessments into bridge designs, ensuring that the infrastructure can withstand severe weather conditions and geological events.
In addition to structural improvements, the project will focus on enhancing the management and administration of transport assets. A dedicated initiative will also promote women’s participation in technical and leadership roles within the transport sector, supporting inclusivity and broader opportunities for all Fijians.
This ambitious plan represents a critical step toward securing the future well-being of Fiji’s population, showcasing a commitment to building resilient infrastructure that accommodates the realities of climate change while fostering economic growth.
