Vanuatu’s Prime Minister, Jotham Napat, has described the forthcoming advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), scheduled for release on July 23, 2025, as an essential moment for global climate justice. He emphasized that this landmark ruling is not only a legal milestone but also a beacon of hope amid the escalating climate crisis, which poses an existential threat to the planet.
Napat remarked, “The Advisory Opinion from the ICJ is expected to clarify the obligations of states regarding climate change,” highlighting the crucial role that international law plays in guiding nations toward responsible climate action. The Prime Minister highlighted alarming trends in climate data, noting that the past decade has seen the ten hottest years recorded, with last year being the hottest overall.
