Climate Finance Focus: Fiji’s Bold Environmental Targets Unveiled

The 2024 Commonwealth Climate Breakfast focused on reaching a consensus for climate finance goals ahead of COP 29. Key topics discussed included access to climate financing, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and strategies for loss and mitigation.

Fiji’s Fisheries and Forestry Minister, Alitia Bainivalu, emphasized two significant targets set under the country’s NDCs for the Ministry of Forestry. She stated that “target 10 aims to conserve our natural environment and biodiversity, ensuring sustainable long-term ecosystem services, including the potential for carbon sequestration.” Additionally, she noted that “target 11 is the initiative to plant 30 million trees over 15 years, which has been a priority for the Ministry since its inception in 2012.”

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is set to conclude on Saturday, October 26.
