Climate Finance Focus: Fiji’s Bold Environmental Goals at CHOGM

The 2024 Commonwealth Climate Breakfast this year aimed to foster agreement on climate finance goals ahead of COP 29.

Key topics such as access to climate finance, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and strategies for loss and mitigation were prominently discussed at the CHOGM Climate Breakfast—Building Consensus for Climate Finance within the Commonwealth.

Fiji’s Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, participated in the event and emphasized two significant targets related to Fiji’s NDCs for the Ministry of Forestry.

Minister Bainivalu stated, “Target 10 focuses on conserving natural environments and biodiversity, which will ensure the sustainable long-term provision of ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration potential.”

She further noted, “Target 11 aims to plant 30 million trees over 15 years, a priority for the Ministry that began in 2012.”

CHOGM will wrap up on Saturday, October 26.
