Cleanup Initiative Set for Suva Harbour’s Derelict Ships

South Sea Towage Limited (SSTL) has initiated preparatory activities and has established a Memorandum of Understanding with Pacific Marine Group to address the issue of derelict ships cluttering Suva Harbour. SSTL is primarily owned by the Unit Trust of Fiji, which holds a 60 percent stake.

Sakiusa Bolaira, General Manager of UTOF, emphasized the urgency of the project, stating that numerous discussions and deadlines have been set to commence the removal of the ships by January 2025. A total of around 80 vessels currently grounded in the harbour are identified for removal, as the degradation of the area needs attention.

Bolaira highlighted the visual impact of the situation, describing it as “horrific,” and pointed out that the presence of these derelict ships is hindering the docking of larger vessels at the harbour. He mentioned collaboration with the Fiji Ports Corporation and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji for the project.

SSTL Chairperson Himmat Lodhia regarded the signing of the Memorandum as a symbol of the collective commitment to clear Suva Harbour of derelict ships and debris. He noted that this initiative will not be confined to Suva but will also extend to other locations in Fiji.

Lodhia acknowledged that this topic has been a focus for leaders for some time, and SSTL, in partnership with Pacific Marine Group, is ready to take action. Additionally, he mentioned plans to broaden their operations to the Solomon Islands in November, building on their existing services in Vanuatu and Nauru.

Lodhia expressed optimism that this MOU will provide a strong foundation not just for the companies involved, but for Fiji as well, enhancing its role as a champion of climate and environmental responsibility.

Andrew Morris, from Pacific Marine Business Development – South Pacific, highlighted the company’s leadership in marine contracting and commercial diving. Based in Townsville, Pacific Marine Group offers a wide range of services, including marine construction, dredging, tug and barge services, commercial diving, and mooring installation, all performed in compliance with stringent external standards and legislation.

Additionally, SSTL maintains a reviewable term contract with Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd, granting it exclusive rights to conduct movements and related services within designated ports, including Suva and Lautoka, Malau, and Warik.
