Amitesh Deo, the chief executive of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, emphasizes that waste management is a shared responsibility among all citizens. His remarks came after volunteers collected 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables during a cleanup campaign along Koronivia Road in Nausori on Friday.

The event was organized by the PRF in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council, and local residents. The cleanup effort commenced at the Koronivia Roundabout and stretched to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive.

This area has been severely affected by improper waste disposal, with significant amounts of refuse being dumped on the streets and in drains, posing risks to the environment and community health. “The quantity of waste we gathered in just two hours highlights the urgent need for everyone to abandon the throwaway culture and take responsibility for their waste. We must all work together to keep Koronivia clean and green for future generations,” Deo stated.

The cleanup revealed large amounts of household waste and recyclable materials, including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and boxes filled with unused goods. These items were clogging drains following recent grass-cutting by the Fiji Roads Authority.

Deo noted that it was regrettable that their teams had to leave some waste behind due to safety concerns regarding hazardous objects in the wet drains that could potentially injure volunteers.

The collection totaled 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans, which Deo indicated reflects an alarming increase in waste disposal in the area compared to previous campaigns, highlighting a significant lack of accountability among residents and visitors.

“This initiative goes beyond merely cleaning up waste; it is about shifting mindsets. We urge every individual to examine their habits and make conscious choices that benefit our environment,” he added. Deo also expressed gratitude to the Fiji Police Force for their support in maintaining safety and traffic flow during the event.
