The Fijian government is prioritizing the provision of clean drinking water to the residents of Udu district in Macuata Province, according to recent statements made by Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sakiusa Tubuna. During a community visit on Friday, Tubuna acknowledged that access to clean drinking water is a pressing issue that villagers face on a daily basis.

Tubuna expressed his commitment to addressing this problem by planning a meeting with the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) to explore potential solutions for ensuring that all residents have reliable access to clean water. Many villagers currently rely on boreholes for their water, which is not a sustainable long-term solution. Tubuna emphasized the need to investigate existing water sources, including potential spring water locations, to secure a consistent supply.

He visited several villages, including Nukudamu, Vunikodi, and Nabuono, where residents have voiced numerous complaints about the state of water infrastructure in the district. Recognizing the importance of quality drinking water for the health of young children and the community at large, Tubuna highlighted the urgent need for strategic improvements.

One proposed initiative is the construction of a large catchment plant in Udu, which would help ensure a sustainable water supply for the three villages and a local school. Furthermore, he mentioned that transportation challenges due to the district’s vast landscape mean that boat travel is essential for movement. The government is considering contributing to new boat engines as part of its support, under a scheme where the government would provide two-thirds of the cost, while the remaining third would need to be raised by the villagers.

This initiative reflects broader governmental efforts to improve infrastructure in Macuata, as evidenced by earlier investments aimed at upgrading essential services, including a recent allocation of $900,000 for clean drinking water projects in nearby villages of Niurua and Naqumu. These investments are part of a larger commitment to enhance the living conditions and resilience of communities within the Northern Division of Fiji.

In summary, the government’s ongoing focus on improving access to clean water underscores its dedication to community welfare, particularly in rural areas. With strategic planning and community involvement, there’s hope for a brighter future with better health and quality of life for the residents of Udu district.
