The residents of Delaikuku in the Tailevu region have achieved a significant milestone by collaborating to improve their access to clean drinking water. Viliame Vuetibureta, a community leader, expressed pride in their efforts to ensure that the local water supply is safeguarded, especially in light of challenges that arose.
In their dedication to this cause, community members pooled funds during traditional yaqona gatherings, raising approximately $3,000 over three events with the assistance of PIANGO (Pacific Island Association of Non-Governmental Organisations). This funding is aimed at addressing issues related to the community’s water supply system, which included the restoration of rainwater harvesting and pipe systems.
Vuetibureta, a 31-year-old community youth leader, emphasized the collaborative spirit of the community, stating that their joint efforts have significantly enhanced their living conditions. They have plans in place to continue working on these initiatives for the next two months, focusing on maintaining a sustainable source of clean water.
The leader highlighted the generosity of PIANGO, which provided around $2,000, further boosting their project to upgrade the water system, which previously was valued at around $5,000. Vuetibureta acknowledged the vital role played by local leaders and the support they have provided in this collective endeavor.
In a hopeful tone, he encouraged the younger generation to actively participate in such initiatives, reminding them of the importance of unity and cooperative work for the betterment of their community. Vuetibureta extended gratitude to Roko Tui Tailevu for leading valuable efforts in ensuring that the water supply remains clean and accessible for the residents every day.
This initiative reflects commendable community solidarity and emphasizes the importance of working together towards sustainable solutions, showcasing the potential for positive change in local infrastructure through collaborative efforts.
