The Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, shared these findings during a press conference, assuring that investigations by the Ministry of Health and the Police are ongoing.

The affected individuals, all women, included four Australians, one American, and two locals. They sought medical attention at Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka after experiencing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues following their consumption of Pina Colada from the resort’s restaurant.

Minister Gavoka expressed satisfaction with the toxicology results, highlighting that no harmful substances were detected. “We are relieved to report that the affected tourists and locals have since been discharged from medical care and are fully recovered,” he said. He emphasized that the absence of evidence for alcohol poisoning is indeed beneficial news for Fiji, especially in terms of reassuring travelers and maintaining the integrity of the tourism sector.

This incident ultimately serves as a reminder of the importance of health and safety in hospitality settings, and the swift response from medical professionals ensured the guests received the necessary care promptly. It also underscores Fiji’s commitment to the well-being of its visitors, reinforcing the nation’s reputation as a safe destination for travelers.

In summary, although the situation initially raised concerns, the investigation’s conclusion provides a positive outlook for both the affected individuals and the broader tourism industry in Fiji. The commitment to guest safety and health remains a top priority, fostering confidence among those looking to visit the beautiful nation. This incident could also serve as an important learning experience for the tourism sector in continuously enhancing its health protocols.
