The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has undertaken its third shoreline clean-up at the Suva Foreshore this year as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program aimed at fostering healthier communities and environmental awareness. With staff members donning gloves and collecting litter in rubbish bags, the initiative sought to address waste left behind by individuals utilizing the area for recreational activities such as picnics and walks.
Chief Executive Solomone Nata emphasized that discussions about climate change and environmental protection require practical actions, such as refraining from littering. His sentiments echo the concerns recently raised by TLTB Secretary Salimoni Karusi, who had highlighted the ongoing environmental neglect seen across various community clean-up efforts in Fiji. This concern comes in the wake of numerous successful community initiatives that also struggled against the pervasive litter problem, particularly from takeaway wrappers and plastic bottles.
Prior similar events showcased a growing civic pride and collective action, with communities rallying to tackle waste management challenges. For instance, a clean-up at My Suva Park attracted over 80 volunteers who removed numerous bags of waste, while previous efforts across communities have further demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship. These collective actions not only aim to clean up public spaces but also foster a sense of accountability and responsibility among participants, especially the young.
Through TLTB’s efforts, there lies a hopeful outlook that continued community engagement, underpinned by strategies to promote sustainability, will contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment throughout Fiji. By prioritizing environmental action, organizations and community members alike can work collaboratively towards fostering a culture of accountability and care for the natural surroundings.
