A parent has been charged with assaulting a teacher at Vunika Primary School in Labasa and was remanded by the Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Shahila Bi, accused of one count of assault, appeared before Magistrate Amelia Vavadakua, with representation from Legal Aid Commission lawyer Iosefo Rusaqoli.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 8 am when Bi allegedly attacked a Year One teacher over a back to school assistance form that was given to her daughter.
Later in the afternoon, the court reconvened to discuss arrangements for Bi’s release on bail, including the need for a surety. In a separate matter, Bi also faces another assault charge involving her mother but was unable to secure surety in this instance.
Police prosecutor Constable Bimlesh Chand suggested that Bi be referred to Saint Giles Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, noting that she had not cooperated with the police during the investigation. Magistrate Vavadakua approved the request for a medical examination and remanded Bi until the next court date set for November 19.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining a safe and supportive environment for students and educators alike. The court’s decision to pursue a psychiatric evaluation could be a crucial step toward ensuring that all parties receive necessary support and care.
Summary: Shahila Bi has been remanded after allegedly assaulting a teacher in a school setting over a dispute regarding school forms. Facing additional charges involving her mother, she will undergo a psychiatric evaluation as part of the court’s examination of her mental health. The case is set to continue in November.
