Opposition Member of Parliament Hem Chand has voiced significant concerns regarding the rising rate of resignations within the civil service, urging the government to adopt immediate measures to retain personnel and tackle the challenges faced in the public sector. During a session in Parliament reviewing the Ministry of Civil Service report, Mr. Chand underscored that the retention of civil servants is critical for the effective functioning of governmental institutions.
He pointed out that civil servants constitute the backbone of government operations, and their satisfaction should be prioritized. “The alarming number of resignations over the past two years raises questions about the government’s strategy to minimize this trend,” Chand stated. “It is urgent that innovative strategies be developed promptly to prevent brain drain and to foster a supportive work environment.”
Mr. Chand also highlighted the necessity for the Ministry of Civil Service to solicit feedback from employees regarding their work conditions and the improvements they seek. He stressed the importance of recognizing the work of civil servants and valuing their contributions to boost retention rates.
One of the main reasons cited for recent resignations includes the high cost of living. Mr. Chand criticized the government’s small salary increase implemented last August, suggesting it does not adequately address this pressing issue. He called for a re-evaluation of the salary increase and urged for a comprehensive review of the civil service salary structure, which was anticipated last year.
Chand advocated for enhanced communication, improved training, and a focused effort on staff retention to bolster the efficiency of the civil service. By addressing these challenges, he believes the government can cultivate a more motivated and effective public service capable of meeting the nation’s needs.
The sentiments expressed by Mr. Chand resonate with broader discussions within the civil service regarding the need for comprehensive reforms to enhance employee welfare as highlighted in recent reports. Initiatives such as reassessing civil servant allowances and providing career advancement opportunities are crucial steps already being discussed to address these challenges effectively.
The ongoing efforts to recognize and appreciate civil servants, along with the government’s commitment to implementing strategic measures for better job satisfaction, reflect a hopeful direction towards reinforcing a stable and engaged workforce in Fiji’s public sector.
