Civil servants across Fiji are being reminded of the critical importance of addressing their personal challenges in order to serve their communities effectively. This message was reinforced following alarming police data indicating that the Western Division is responsible for 40% of domestic violence cases against women and 35% of cases against children reported over the last five years.

Police Inspector Usaia Donu highlighted that the rise in domestic violence is intricately linked to increasing drug abuse, emphasizing that drug traffickers are particularly targeting vulnerable families, exacerbating the cycle of violence and instability within communities. In light of these circumstances, Inspector Donu urged civil servants to seek help if they are facing personal issues, stating, “We cannot be giving help, we cannot be servants to the community and to the society, and even our house is not in order.”

Echoing these sentiments, Luke Rokovada, Chair of the Public Service Commission, has called for workplaces to establish safe spaces and support systems for civil servants affected by domestic violence or substance abuse. He stressed the importance of prioritizing personal well-being, as healthy family environments are essential for building a strong and resilient public service.

This urgent reminder aligns with ongoing discussions regarding the escalating social issues impacting Fiji’s communities, particularly among civil servants. Previous efforts, including mandatory training programs aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence and drug abuse, were also discussed. These initiatives reflect a commitment to support victims and promote a culture of respect and dignity within the public sector.

Moreover, the collective response from government officials and community leaders showcases a hopeful vision for the future, emphasizing the potential for positive change through collaborative efforts. By prioritizing safety and support, Fiji can aspire to create an environment where every civil servant can thrive personally and professionally, ultimately contributing to a more resilient and compassionate society.
