The Public Service Disciplinary Tribunal has concluded that the Ministry of Finance must reinstate Ashwin Nand, a civil servant who faced suspension after being charged with multiple offenses. These incidents occurred between December 2023 and February 2024 and included carrying alcohol in a government vehicle and intrusive behavior towards the Assistant Minister of Finance.

The tribunal, composed of four members, stated that Mr. Nand should be formally reprimanded for his actions, which involved consuming alcohol during work-related travel, damaging a colleague’s phone, missing scheduled meetings, and failing to treat coworkers with proper respect. The ruling emphasized the need for a written notification advising Mr. Nand that any future breaches of conduct could lead to termination.

While Mr. Nand has been ordered to return to work within seven days from December 20, 2024, he will forfeit his salary that was withheld from May 29, 2024.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability and the need for a supportive workplace where respect and adherence to conduct codes are upheld. Despite the serious nature of the offenses, Mr. Nand’s reinstatement can be seen as an opportunity for rehabilitation and growth, encouraging a culture of learning from mistakes within public service.

In summary, the tribunal’s decision reflects a balanced approach, allowing for a second chance while firmly setting boundaries for future conduct.
