The Public Service Disciplinary Tribunal has mandated the Ministry of Finance to reinstate Ashwin Nand, a civil servant who faced suspension due to eight serious charges. These charges included the inappropriate use of a government vehicle for transporting alcohol and making unauthorized entries into the Assistant Minister of Finance’s vehicle.
Nand, who holds the position of manager for macroeconomic forecasting, policy, research, and analysis, was found to have engaged in misconduct during the months of December 2023 and February 2024. In their ruling, the tribunal emphasized that the ministry should formally reprimand Nand for his actions, including carrying alcohol in a government vehicle, consuming alcohol during work-related travel, damaging a colleague’s mobile phone, skipping scheduled meetings, and failing to treat coworkers with the necessary courtesy and respect.
Furthermore, the tribunal advised that Nand be warned that any future breaches of conduct or further misconduct could lead to termination of his employment. Despite his reinstatement, the tribunal has decided that Nand will forfeit his salary from May 29, 2024, up until the ruling was made.
Nand is required to return to work within seven days from December 20.
This decision indicates a willingness to address misconduct within public service while also providing an opportunity for growth and improvement. It reflects the tribunal’s intent to uphold standards while allowing an individual a second chance, which can serve as a reminder to all employees about the importance of professionalism and accountability in the workplace.
