The Public Service Disciplinary Tribunal has directed the Ministry of Finance to reinstate Ashwin Nand, a civil servant suspended for serious infractions. Nand faced eight charges, which included transporting alcohol in a government vehicle and unlawfully entering the vehicle of the Assistant Minister of Finance.
The violations occurred between December 2023 and February 2024, and the tribunal’s decision reflects a balance between accountability and the possibility of rehabilitation. They mandated that the Ministry issue a written reprimand to Nand, condemning his actions, which included alcohol consumption on work trips, damaging a colleague’s phone, failing to attend scheduled meetings, and showing disrespect to fellow employees. Moreover, the tribunal warned that any future violations of conduct could lead to termination.
Although Nand’s salary for the period from May 29, 2024, will not be restored, he is expected to return to work within a week following the tribunal’s ruling on December 20.
This decision offers a second chance for Nand to demonstrate his commitment and ability to adhere to workplace standards. It also highlights the importance of providing opportunities for employees to learn from their mistakes, which can ultimately contribute to a more respectful and effective workplace culture.
