Cicia High School has made a remarkable return to the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Finals after a five-year absence, showcasing the resilience and determination of its athletes. The school’s team, affectionately dubbed “the Brave Six” by coach Luke Raibevu, consists of six talented athletes who recently qualified for the Fiji Finals, which will take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva starting Thursday.

Raibevu expressed pride in the dedication his team has shown, emphasizing their hard work leading up to this moment. “We were absent for five years; but we are back and we are much stronger than ever,” he stated. The success of the athletes, according to Raibevu, is a testament to their sacrifice and commitment to the sport.

Among the standout performances was senior javelin thrower Semesa Kalikalisui, who won gold with a personal best throw of 57.86 meters. This impressive mark was close to breaking the Fiji Finals record of 59.69 meters set by Jone Vosabalavu of Queen Victoria School in 2022. Kalikalisui remains optimistic, aiming to exceed 60 meters at the Finals, stating, “It’s all in the mind.”

In addition to Kalikalisui, fellow athlete Jone Driso also excelled, clinching gold in the long jump event. Despite challenges such as funding and logistics, Raibevu remains determined to create a historic moment for Cicia High School. He noted the significant effort from parents, supporters, and old scholars who contributed to realizing this journey to the finals.

With Cicia High School poised to compete against other schools in the Fiji Finals, the spirit of community and commitment to athletics is evident. The school aims not just to participate but to make a significant mark and bring home medals to celebrate their comeback.

The success of Cicia High School reflects a broader trend within Fiji’s educational athletics, demonstrating the growing enthusiasm and support for young athletes. The dedication shown by these students reinforces the hopeful narrative of sports fostering talent and building a stronger athletic culture in the region.
