The president of the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma, Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, has indicated the church’s eagerness to engage in discussions surrounding the social issues facing the nation. Mr. Turagavou expressed the church’s intention to participate in significant conversations related to drugs, HIV/AIDS, and other pressing matters.
This proactive approach is crucial, especially given the various challenges our country currently faces. We are confronted with serious issues, including a substantial drug problem that persists despite any acknowledgment from those in positions of power. The alarming frequency of arrests for methamphetamine possession highlights the severity of the situation. Moreover, there have been instances of cocaine use and a concerning increase in HIV cases associated with drug use.
On the island of Moala, for example, cocaine and marijuana are reported as the two most commonly used drugs. A police report from July noted that cocaine use had been observed in one village since 2018, reflecting the growing problem of substance abuse in that area.
The issue gained widespread attention after the discovery of 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine in a raid at Legalega in Nadi earlier this year. Additionally, the rise in HIV cases presents another significant challenge, with 552 cases reported from January to June of this year compared to only 415 for all of 2023, which is alarming.
In the midst of these challenges, the willingness of the church to engage in finding solutions is heartening. Our nation’s issues demand urgent attention, and it is crucial for all members of society to contribute to addressing these concerns. Parents and guardians have a vital role in guiding the youth to realize their potential, while responsible adults, civil society groups, educators, churches, local communities, and the government must also play their parts.
During crises, it is essential for all sectors of society to unite in confronting these pressing challenges. Recognizing the magnitude of the issues we face is vital, and so is the determination and commitment to create meaningful change.
