The President of the Methodist Church, Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, has emphasized the church’s unwavering dedication to reconciliation anchored in biblical values of repentance and renewal. This commitment comes in light of the church’s collaboration with the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC), highlighting the church’s essential role in national reconciliation efforts.

Reverend Turagavou noted that the reconciliation process must initiate within families and congregations before expanding to the national level. He stated, “We believe reconciliation must begin within families and congregations before it can take shape on a national scale.” The church is actively involved in its internal reconciliation program, demonstrating its readiness to engage with the FTRC in fostering a culture of healing and understanding.

FTRC Community Outreach consultant Elizabeth Krishna characterized the meeting with Reverend Turagavou as both significant and vital. She praised the strong support expressed by the reverend, remarking, “It was especially inspiring to learn the Church’s reconciliation process began months ago, starting from the grassroots to high-level leadership,” indicating a comprehensive approach to healing.

Similar initiatives have echoed the importance of collaboration among various sectors of society. Previous discussions involving faith leaders in Fiji have expressed a collective commitment to fostering a spirit of unity and healing throughout the nation, reinforcing the idea that reconciliation transcends mere political or legal frameworks and is rooted in a profound spiritual journey.

These efforts collectively signal a hopeful path toward national healing, as communities engage in open dialogues, share their truths, and work toward a brighter, more unified future. The Methodist Church’s commitment to reconciliation, paired with the efforts of the FTRC and other community leaders, highlights the importance of collective healing in the wake of historical trauma.
