Athletes showcasing their talent took center stage during the Church College of Fiji’s inter-house meet held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This event marks the school’s initial foray into athletics for the year as preparations ramp up for both the zonal athletics meet and the anticipated 2026 Fiji Finals.
Flora Dakuiyau, the head of the school’s physical education, music, and art and craft (PEMAC) department, expressed optimism about the potential of the athletes participating in the event. “We’ve been seeing quite a few promising students and athletes for the zone, so we’re quite excited,” she noted.
The school, which has expanded its enrollment to approximately 500 students, is thrilled to discover a wealth of new talents among its students. Dakuiyau highlighted that excitement is palpable as the athletes gear up for the upcoming zone meet.
She also referenced the school’s elite squad from last year’s Coca-Cola Games—commonly known as the Fiji Finals—who have been in training since the beginning of the academic year. “These students participated in the Cokes and also in the zone athletics meet. They’ve been training ever since school started. A handful of them have been working with other coaches, so we’re expecting very good results,” she shared.
In addition to athletics, the school is preparing for a significant milestone as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Dakuiyau emphasized that this occasion serves as a motivating factor for students. “All the more reason to work harder and to produce results so that come the 50th anniversary in due time, we will be able to celebrate something more special,” she remarked.
The inter-house meet concluded in the afternoon, highlighting a bright start to the school’s athletics journey this year. The enthusiasm and commitment displayed by the athletes set a positive tone for the events to come, as they strive to excel and make their school proud.
