The Catholic Church of Fiji has expressed concern over the rising number of street dwellers in Suva, particularly highlighting that most of them are iTaukei. As part of their daily efforts, the church distributes food packs to those living on the streets.
Ben Salacakau, a representative of the Catholic Church in Fiji, emphasized the urgent health implications stemming from this increase in street dwellers, indicating the need for a comprehensive plan to tackle the issue. He noted that the growth in the iTaukei population among the homeless demands a collective response from families and local communities.
Salacakau described the situation as a significant challenge not only for the church but also for the families of the street dwellers, urging a shared responsibility to address the crisis. He pointed out that street dwellers in Suva reflect a broader concern faced by many urban communities, including various organizations and churches.
The church aims to provide not just immediate resources like food and shelter, but also long-term support including counseling and job training. Salacakau highlighted the importance of their food and nutrition programs, as well as regular food distribution efforts, to ensure that those living on the streets have access to healthy meals.
He also called attention to the necessity of mental health counseling and support for substance abuse issues that may be contributing to homelessness, noting that street dwellers are vulnerable to violence and exploitation, thus emphasizing the need for safety and security in the assistance provided.
The lack of infrastructure to support shelters and services for these individuals adds to the challenges faced. Salacakau pointed out that social stigma and discrimination hamper street dwellers from accessing essential services or reintegrating into society, which can affect community support for initiatives aimed at helping them.
He stressed the importance of improving coordination among various organizations, including government entities, NGOs, and religious groups, to create a more effective and cohesive support system. Salacakau is advocating for increased awareness and better policies to aid street dwellers at both local and national levels.
