Vilise Daunimasi decided to prioritize the safety of his children during the recent Christmas flooding in Korovuto, Nadi, instead of focusing on holiday celebrations. The 32-year-old security guard and his family were the sole evacuees at Korovuto College on that day.

Their home, situated near the Nadi River, was inundated by rising waters due to relentless rainfall. Mr. Daunimasi shared that flooding is a familiar occurrence during inclement weather, yet the severity of this flood surprised them.

On Christmas morning, he and his family began packing essential items, including food and clothes, in preparation for evacuation. By midday, they contacted the police for assistance, prioritizing the safe transport of women and children to the evacuation center before he and his father followed. Mr. Daunimasi described the water level reaching halfway up their waists—a stark reminder of the unexpected challenges they faced as the year drew to a close.

Despite the distressing situation, he expressed gratitude that no lives were lost, particularly those of the children.

This heartwarming focus on family safety amidst the turmoil highlights the resilience and gratitude of individuals facing natural disasters. It serves as a poignant reminder of the true spirit of the holidays: cherishing loved ones and remaining hopeful in the face of adversity.
