Vilise Daunimasi prioritized the safety of his children over Christmas celebrations as heavy rains led to flooding in his neighborhood in Korovuto, Nadi. On a recent Tuesday, Daunimasi, along with his family, became the lone evacuees at Korovuto College after their home, situated near the Nadi River, was submerged.
The 32-year-old security guard expressed that heavy rains often lead to flooding in the area; however, the extent of the flood was unexpected this time. “It is always flooded when there is heavy rain. Sometimes it is dangerous and we are always ready for that kind of situation,” he remarked.
On Christmas Day, as they prepared to evacuate, Daunimasi and his family began packing essential items. They contacted the Police for assistance in being relocated to a safe evacuation center. The family members were evacuated in stages, with women and children being taken first, followed by Daunimasi and his father. The floodwaters had risen to waist height when they made their escape, a daunting situation occurring at such a festive time of year.
