Vilise Daunimasi prioritized the safety of his children over Christmas celebrations as heavy rains caused significant flooding in his community near Nadi, Fiji. The 32-year-old security guard and his family were among the few evacuees at Korovuto College on Tuesday. Their home, located close to the Nadi River, was inundated, prompting them to seek refuge.

Mr. Daunimasi expressed that flooding during heavy rain is a common occurrence for them, but the severity of the situation on Christmas caught him off guard. Preparations began on Christmas morning as the family packed food and clothing to move to an evacuation center. Emergency services were called to assist in relocating his family, ensuring that women and children were taken first.

As the water levels rose to waist height, Mr. Daunimasi reflected on the unexpected nature of this flood occurring so late in the year, but he remained grateful that no lives were lost, especially those of the children.

This story highlights the resilience and quick thinking of families facing natural disasters. Despite the challenges they encountered, Mr. Daunimasi’s focus on safety over holiday festivities serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preparedness during unpredictable weather events.

Amidst the struggles, the situation showcases community solidarity and the proactive measures taken to protect vulnerable members, offering hope that families can weather such storms together.
