Christmas Travel Chaos: Overloaded Boats Raise Safety Alarms

As the festive season approaches, many individuals are flocking to the mainland for Christmas celebrations, leading to significant overcrowding on vessels. Joeli Cawaki, the CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), reported that this week, a boat in Natewa Bay had to remove 10 passengers due to overloading.

Cawaki highlighted that the increase in overcrowding incidents stems from practices at the ticketing stage by shipping companies. He mentioned that one boat had to be halted due to exceeding its capacity, necessitating an unloading of passengers for a recount.

To address the issue, Cawaki urged ship owners to limit ticket sales to 75% of the vessel’s capacity at ticket booths, while permitting the remaining 25% to be sold at the jetty. Although this strategy has proven effective in the past, it failed to prevent overcrowding at Natewa Bay.

Emphasizing the importance of safety, Cawaki noted that while the problem isn’t solely the passengers’ responsibility, adherence to regulations is crucial. He stated, “For us, it’s not about issuing penalties but ensuring that the boat carries the correct number of passengers.” This commitment is driven by the priority of passenger safety, particularly in case of emergencies at sea.

Cawaki underscored that the limits on passenger numbers are determined by the available space and equipment onboard, including life rafts and life jackets. Each individual must have access to adequate safety gear in emergencies, ensuring that travel remains both joyous and secure during this festive time.

In sum, while the holiday rush leads to challenges with overcrowding on vessels, the proactive measures recommended by the MSAF aim to enhance safety for all passengers traveling during the Christmas period. With careful planning and adherence to safety regulations, it is possible to enjoy a joyful holiday celebration while prioritizing the well-being of everyone on board.
