In the past 72 hours, police recorded a total of 934 traffic violations, highlighting the safety concerns on the roads during the busy Christmas shopping season. Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu indicated that minor offenses were the most common, with 440 citations issued for lesser infractions and 311 for speeding violations.
ACP Driu pointed out that speeding continues to be a significant factor in accidents, urging all drivers to adhere to speed limits for the safety of everyone on the road. The data also revealed that 58 individuals were cited for careless driving, while 51 were penalized for both failing to present a driving license and not wearing seat belts. Additionally, there were 10 instances of drivers exceeding passenger limits, 8 for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 for operating vehicles with expired licenses.
To promote safe driving practices, ACP Driu noted the ongoing traffic awareness campaigns and the importance of having proper documentation readily available. Alarmingly, 23 drivers were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, underscoring the dangers posed by impaired driving.
Looking ahead, ACP Driu assured the public that traffic officers would maintain vigilance on the roads due to anticipated increased traffic. He advised travelers to plan their trips carefully, prioritize rest, and limit alcohol consumption if driving is involved. Checkpoints will remain active as part of the efforts to ensure safety and security for all road users.
This emphasis on safety and awareness reflects the commitment of the authorities to keep the roads secure during the holiday rush, reminding everyone of the shared responsibility in ensuring a safe driving environment.
Overall, the proactive measures taken by traffic authorities demonstrate a strong focus on reducing road accidents and promoting responsible driving, which are crucial steps towards safer communities.
