In the past 72 hours, a total of 934 traffic violations have been reported, primarily attributed to the surge in holiday shopping activity. Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu pointed out that minor infractions comprised the majority of these offences, with 440 individuals cited for such violations. Speeding was highlighted as a significant concern, with 311 drivers penalized for exceeding speed limits.

“Speeding remains the leading cause of accidents, and we urge drivers to adhere strictly to speed limits,” ACP Driu emphasized. Furthermore, 58 drivers were penalized for careless driving, while 51 individuals each were cited for failing to produce a driving license and for not wearing seat belts. Other notable offences included 10 drivers caught for carrying more passengers than allowed, 8 for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 for operating vehicles with expired licenses.

To promote road safety, ACP Driu stated that law enforcement has been actively engaging in traffic awareness initiatives and encouraging drivers to have the proper documentation ready upon request. Notably, 23 drivers were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol during this period.

As road traffic is expected to remain high, ACP Driu assured that traffic officers will be vigilant, and checkpoints will continue to be established to ensure public safety. “It is essential to plan your trips wisely, ensuring you are well-rested and mindful of alcohol consumption if you intend to drive afterward,” he advised.

This proactive approach by law enforcement highlights the importance of road safety, especially during the busy holiday season. The continued presence of checkpoints serves as a reminder to all drivers to prioritize safety and compliance with traffic laws, creating a safer environment for everyone on the roads.
