As the festive season draws near, families are encouraged to pause and consider the significance of the vulnerable Christ Child. Reverend James Bhagwan, the general secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches, highlighted the plight of vulnerable children within Fiji, emphasizing the need to reflect on those facing various adversities such as violence, neglect, and the pressures of academic systems amidst a rising cost of living.
Referencing a powerful verse from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, which depicts the birth of a child imbued with great authority and peace, Reverend Bhagwan called for families to extend their compassion beyond their celebrations, particularly towards those children impacted by climate change, social unrest, and economic hardship.
He pointed out that many families in West Papua are internally displaced, forced to spend Christmas in the wilderness due to military conflicts, while children in the Marshall Islands and other regions suffer from the enduring effects of nuclear testing conducted in the past.
Reverend Bhagwan urged that as people celebrate Christmas, it is essential to remember the “least among us” and actively embody love through justice and peace. He stressed the importance of ensuring safety and well-being for children and fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can experience joy and fulfillment.
He concluded with a heartfelt wish for families to embrace the spirit of Christmas by expressing love positively and ensuring that peace and unity prevail during the festive season and beyond.
This message serves as a reminder that the celebration of Christmas is not just about personal joy, but about collective compassion and responsibility towards those in need. It offers a hopeful perspective; even amidst challenges, the spirit of goodwill can foster meaningful change within communities.
