Vilise Daunimasi prioritized the safety of his family over Christmas festivities as he dealt with flooding at his home in Korovuto, Nadi, this past Tuesday. The 32-year-old security guard, along with his family, became the sole evacuees at Korovuto College after their residence was impacted by rising water levels due to heavy rainfall.
Daunimasi, who is accustomed to the threat of flooding during heavy rains, mentioned that Tuesday’s flood came as a surprise. On Christmas morning, he began preparing for evacuation by packing essential supplies. As the situation worsened, he sought assistance from the police to transport his family to an evacuation center, ensuring women and children were taken first.
“As the water reached halfway up our waists on Christmas day, we did not expect to face such a situation at the end of 2024,” he expressed. Despite the challenges, Daunimasi remained grateful that no lives were lost, particularly those of the children.
This incident highlights the resilience and preparedness of families in flood-prone areas. While the holiday celebrations were interrupted, the safety of loved ones remained the top priority. The community’s ability to come together in times of crisis reflects a hopeful spirit that can emerge even amid challenges.
In the face of adversity, it serves as a reminder of the importance of readiness and the profound value of family and community support during difficult times.
