Vilise Daunimasi, a 32-year-old security guard from Korovuto, Nadi, prioritized the safety of his family over Christmas celebrations as they faced unexpected flooding. On Tuesday, his home, located near the Nadi River, was inundated due to heavy rain, forcing them to evacuate to Korovuto College, where they were the only evacuees.

Mr. Daunimasi noted that while flooding is common during heavy rain, they didn’t anticipate such a significant rise in water levels this time. On Christmas morning, he and his family began packing essential items before reaching out for assistance. The police promptly helped them evacuate, first taking the women and children, followed by Mr. Daunimasi and his father.

While the floodwaters reached waist-deep, the family remains grateful that they were unharmed, particularly the children. His story highlights the resilience and preparedness of families in the face of unforeseen natural challenges.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of disaster readiness, especially during seasons of celebration when weather conditions can change unexpectedly. The community spirit and the quick response of local authorities can make a significant difference in ensuring safety during such emergencies.
