Vilise Daunimasi decided to focus on the safety of his family rather than the Christmas celebrations, as they faced flooding in their home in Korovuto, Nadi, this past Tuesday. The 32-year-old security guard and his family were among the few evacuees at Korovuto College after their home, situated close to the Nadi River, was inundated due to heavy rain and rising water levels.
Reflecting on the flood, Mr. Daunimasi noted that while their area often experiences such flooding after significant rain, this particular event took them by surprise. “On Christmas morning, we began preparing to evacuate by packing food and clothes. By midday, we contacted the police for assistance in reaching an evacuation center. They ensured the safety of women and children first, followed by myself and my father,” he recounted.
The situation escalated quickly, with water levels rising to waist height. Despite the challenging circumstances, Mr. Daunimasi expressed gratitude that everyone remained safe, especially the children. “We are thankful that no lives have been taken away, particularly our children,” he stated.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community support and resilience in the face of natural disasters. It is heartening to see families coming together during difficult times, putting safety first while expressing gratitude for life’s blessings, even amidst adversity.
Summary: Vilise Daunimasi and his family prioritized safety over Christmas celebrations as flooding forced them to evacuate. Despite the unexpected flood, they were thankful that everyone, especially the children, remained unharmed.
