Vilise Daunimasi prioritized the safety of his children over Christmas festivities as he and his family sought refuge from the rising floodwaters in Korovuto, Nadi. On Tuesday, the family found themselves as the only evacuees at Korovuto College after their home near the Nadi River was inundated due to heavy rainfall.
Daunimasi, a 32-year-old security guard, shared that flooding is a regular occurrence during heavy rains in their area, but this particular situation caught them off guard. “It is always flooded when there is heavy rain. Sometimes it is dangerous and we are always ready for that kind of situation,” he remarked.
On Christmas morning, the family began packing essentials like food and clothing in anticipation of the evacuation. By midday, they alerted the police for assistance in reaching the evacuation center. The rescue operations prioritized women and children, with Daunimasi and his father following them to safety.
Despite the floodwaters rising to waist height, Daunimasi expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in their family, especially those of the children. As the year comes to an unexpected close, he remains hopeful and reflects on the importance of family safety.
This story highlights the resilience and preparedness of families in the face of natural adversities. While Christmas celebrations took a backseat for the Daunimasi family, their commitment to keeping their loved ones safe remains a beacon of hope amid challenging circumstances.
