On Christmas Day, law enforcement agencies arrested six individuals for drug possession. Among those apprehended was a 38-year-old unemployed man from Nabua, who was discovered to have seven sachets of what is believed to be marijuana, packaged in aluminum foil. In a separate incident, a 24-year-old from Qauia, Lami, was found in possession of a branch of dried leaves, also thought to be marijuana, following a police search.
Additionally, two men aged 44 and 40, hailing from Vusuya, Nausori, were taken into custody in Valelevu after they were found with two zip-lock bags containing a crystal-like substance, suspected to be methamphetamine. A 52-year-old man from Nakelo, Tailevu, was apprehended with 20 sachets of dried leaves, similarly wrapped in aluminum foil and believed to be marijuana. In Lautoka, a 50-year-old unemployed man from Tomuka was arrested for possessing five sachets of dried leaves, also thought to be marijuana.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, the police conducted drug checks throughout Christmas Day to ensure public safety. He mentioned that law enforcement personnel would continue to monitor popular picnic spots and communities to deter drug-related activities. All six suspects remain in police custody as further investigations and drug analysis are conducted.
This proactive approach by the police underscores the commitment to maintaining community safety during festive periods, highlighting the importance of vigilance against illicit activities.
