Six individuals are currently in police custody, pending drug analysis, after being allegedly found with marijuana on Christmas day. Their arrests occurred as part of the Fiji Police Force’s ongoing efforts to combat the distribution of illicit drugs during the festive season.
In the Southern Division, police apprehended a 38-year-old unemployed man in Nabua, Suva, who reportedly possessed seven sachets of dried leaves thought to be marijuana, all wrapped in aluminum foil. A raid in Qauia, Lami, led to the arrest of a 24-year-old unemployed man with a branch of dried leaves also suspected to be marijuana. Additionally, a 52-year-old man from Nakelo, Tailevu, was found with 20 sachets of dried leaves in a similar state of wrapping.
Two other men from Vusuya, Kuku near Nausori Town, were arrested at Valelevu, Nasinu, where they allegedly were in possession of two ziplock bags containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine.
In the Western Division, a 50-year-old unemployed man from Tomuka, Lautoka, was taken into custody for allegedly having five sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana, similarly wrapped in aluminum foil.
As police ramp up their drug enforcement operations, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized their vigilance for opportunistic drug transactions in public areas and communities during this holiday period.
This ongoing crackdown highlights the police’s commitment to ensuring community safety and reducing drug-related activities, especially during times when illicit substances can be more prevalent. The heightened presence and vigilance of law enforcement may foster a safer environment for everyone during the holiday season.
