On Christmas Day, six individuals were apprehended on charges of drug possession across different locations. Among those, a 38-year-old jobless man from Nabua was caught holding seven sachets of dried leaves, suspected to be marijuana. A 24-year-old man from Qauia, Lami, was also found with a branch of dried leaves believed to be marijuana during a police search.

Additionally, two men, aged 44 and 40 from Vusuya, Nausori, were arrested in Valelevu after police discovered two zip lock bags containing a crystal-like substance that is presumed to be methamphetamine. In another incident, a 52-year-old from Nakelo, Tailevu, was found with twenty sachets of dried leaves, similarly wrapped in aluminum foil and believed to be marijuana. In Lautoka, a 50-year-old unemployed man from Tomuka was caught with five sachets of dried leaves thought to be marijuana.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu reported that the police maintained vigilance during the holiday and will continue checks in public places and communities to deter drug-related offenses. All six suspects are currently in police custody as investigations proceed and drug analysis is awaited.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges with drug use in Fiji, especially during festive times when gatherings are common. It also reflects the determined efforts of law enforcement to keep communities safe by actively patrolling and monitoring for illicit activities. The presence of police during holidays serves as a reminder of the community’s collective responsibility to uphold public safety.
